A Spiritual Choice

Life doesn’t always present us with stark choices. It’s often very muddled. But after watching full videos of candidate’s speeches this weekend, the fundamental nature of the choice before us became stark to me.  It’s not just political or moral, it’s spiritual. It touches upon the roots of our psyche. It knocks on the door of the soul that we either open through faith in Love or close through believing in the power of fear, giving up on love and moving with a condemning spirit.

It’s ironic that one of the candidates keeps telling “The Snake” story because the choice before us is like the one that faced Adam and Eve (whether you take that story symbolically – as I do – or literally. The message is the same either way). Are we going to believe and seek to move with God (The Creative, Holy Spirit of Love) or pursue ego-centered power through what I call the fame, blame and shame game (Adam and Eve’s choice)?*  The former path is subtle and often slow but it inspires and heals through making healthy, loving connections. The latter path is blatant and fast but it inflames and divides.  It accesses a certain type of power but it’s very hard for love to get through it's inflaming divisiveness. While it may get this or that thing done, it hurts more than it heals by its very nature. It hardens hearts. No one is truly at home where that spirit rules because fear is governing and walls go up where fear rules. We must value the power of love more than fear in order for love to rule our lives. Truly worshiping God leads us to see the worth of love. Ultimately, failing to value love over fear is to fail in our worship of God.

I recognize that there are many issues before us as a country. I have found myself agreeing with each of the candidates on certain points that they have made. I don’t agree with any of them on all points. They are all doing their best given where they are coming from and should be appreciated for their great effort. None of the candidates should be demonized (and I mean that). What I am talking about here is a movement of spirit that is probably best symbolized by something like a snake, not a person.

All of us are children of God who must chose the spirit with which we will try to move moment by moment, day by day. That choice means almost infinitely more than any other. It’s a fundamental choice involving identity, direction and alignment that creates or undermines our inner and outer worlds. It leads to creating and experiencing heaven or hell.

More power to you in moving with The Spirit that frees souls through faith in love. That helps everyone.

Thanks and blessings,
Scott

*(I have a chapter on this in my book - The Rest that Works: Living A Life of Loving Mindfulness. There’s also a class starting tomorrow with a couple spaces left if you’re interested. Here’s the link to more information if you’re interested: http://www.therestthatworks.com/events-calendar.html).
